A Wild Eskdale Walk with Kevin Cumming

On what proved to be a fabulously warm autumnal day we were joined by Kevin Cumming the new Project Manager of Langholm Initiative's Project "Wild Eskdale". It was a good opportunity for him to brief David and Tom on his project which will be launched at The Monument on Wednesday 31st October at 10.30am. I had promised to cover for Bob McLure at the Bird Feeders and do the topping up of the feeders so this was an opportunity to enjoy a nice 6 mile walk and  do my wee job at the same time. The weather was just perfect and very warm so it was a most enjoyable morning walk and finished in style with a lovely light lunch at The Buccleuch Centre.
The view from Broomholmshiels road
Tom enjoying the view from the Laverock Bird Hide but just don't ask him to identify any birds.

Hi Gavin
Really enjoy reading your blogs. My wife and I have recently moved to the area (Rowanburn) in readiness for our retirement , and find your local walks particularly interesting.
We have purchased the Langholm walks book and completed a couple of the walks.
I wonder if you could possibly give me a couple of hints where we would have a good chance of spotting woodpeckers and perhaps a Kingfisher as we are yet to spot these species.
We would appreciate any help you could offer.
Thanks.
Steve and Bernice.

The best place for Woodpeckers is the Maverick Hide near Langholm. When you come into Langholm cross the Skippers Bridge and turn right on the B6138 which is actually closed but not for the first mile. Just before where the road is closed turn left where you see the sign Maverick Hide. It is about quarter of a mile from there. There are Kingfishers about the Langholm area but I rarely see them so cannot really say a good place but just keep your eyes open whenever you are walking near the river. Thanks for your kind comments. I hope to meet up with you one of these days. I was brought up for the first 10 years of my life in 50 Rowanburn. Happy memories.
